What is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a simple and effective cosmetic treatment used to hide tooth imperfections and flaws. The procedure can be completed in one hour or less, and patients will notice a more beautiful smile that blends in with the rest of their teeth, since the composite resin that is used is matched to their natural tooth color.
What Are the Benefits of Dental Bonding?
- Affordability: Unlike porcelain veneers or orthodontics, dental bonding offers patients an affordable cosmetic dentistry option.
- Less invasive: Other cosmetic treatments require much more intense and invasive procedures. Whether it’s filing down a tooth or shaving off some of the enamel, you won’t have to worry about dental bonding being an invasive procedure.
- Less time: In just one hour or less, we can fix the imperfections/problem areas on your teeth, making it much more conducive to a patient’s busy schedule.
- Versatility: Dental bonding is a versatile treatment method that can hide many cosmetic flaws.
What is Dental Bonding Used to Treat/Fix?
Dr. Shults will examine and evaluate your smile during your consultation to determine if dental bonding is right for you. Some imperfections and dental problems will require more extensive methods of treatment. With dental bonding, minor cosmetic problems can be fixed and/or treated, such as:
- Small chips in your teeth
- Minor gaps
- Stains or discoloration
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Before starting the procedure, we’ll use a shade guide to help match the color of the resin to the natural color of your teeth. This will ensure that once the resin is placed, it will blend in with the rest of your smile. Next, we will roughen the surface of your tooth using a special substance. This is painless and will allow the bonding agent to adhere to your tooth and help the resin stay in place.
Using the composite resin, which is like a putty material, we will place it on the tooth’s surface and begin to shape it accordingly. Once we have it sculpted, we will use a curing light to harden the resin in place. To finalize the process, we will polish and buff the tooth to provide a smooth texture and create a beautiful smile.
Dental Bonding Recovery and Care
To prevent staining or damage to the resin, there are a few tips you should follow:
- Avoid or limit the amount of coffee, tea, or other dark-colored beverages you drink.
- Quit smoking, as it stains your teeth and increases your chance of developing gum disease and oral cancer.
- Avoid biting your nails or chewing on ice cubes or other inanimate objects
When you bite down, if you feel any sharp edges, you should call our office as soon as possible. It may be a sign that your dental bonding needs to be repaired.
